Australian Open – The Lakes provided as always a great tournament, with one of the best back nines you will play, it gives players plenty of opportunities to make birdies with the threat of disaster close by. Greg Chalmers (Snake to his friends) got up and down from the bunker on the last to win his first tournament in ages! It goes to show you how fine a line it is on the PGA Tour & Nationwide Tours. He has his PGA Tour Card next year so look for a good showing from him. John Sendon finished second and for once showed us what would happen if he could hole a few putts! 63 in the 3rd round! It was also the re-birthing of Tiger and he showed us he is just about back with a great display of shot making and patience. He holed nothing the last day and played well enough to win. Thought the greens could have been a little faster but the course looked beautiful.
>Presidents Cup – What a great event! With the world’s best players, at the world’s best course, it was always going to be fun! I think being there was a lot better than watching the US Telecast which apparently, was a little boring. As usual we expect our guys to play well every time but never do… On reflection the US had guys like Webb Simpson, Nick Watney, Hunter Mahan all had awesome 2011’s and are superb players, throw in Phil and Tiger and how can we win?? Tiger showed he is back and played some great golf. It was a surprise to see Phil embrace Tiger after he got smacked the first day … maybe they love each other now??? I also heard Tiger was great in the locker rooms, which again shows he is back. I was very surprised to see Jason Day shoot 44 the front nine on the last day and get totally wiped!
As for Captains picks, I still say Allenby was the only guy Norman could pick…could he really pick VJ? …not a chance!
So this week sees the PGA Championship at Coolum, which is a great location but bloody hot! With very grainy greens look for a Queenslander to win, I’m sure we will see bubba jet skiing around up there.
So let’s see what interesting stories come out of this week! There has been a ton already this Summer which in a way is good for golf!
