“I have never come across a piece of land so ideally suited for the building of a golf course,” said Arnold Palmer.
Tralee Golf Course was his first Irish endeavour and it opened in 1984; it’s a rugged and exhilarating creation. Now, let’s be honest, Kerry is a very special county, the “Lake District” of Ireland, an unspoilt, quiet and romantic place. Surely anybody could design a golf course in these surroundings? Arnold Palmer designed a course that will stimulate the senses every bit as much as the enchanting and breathtaking scenery. The combination and variety of the holes makes the entire experience captivating and exciting. There are only a few courses that grab your attention from the first tee shot, keeping hold of it until the very last putt drops.

Waterville plays on a promontory surrounded by the sea. It is a stunning, remote location with views to the northeast of the Macgillycuddy’s Reeks Mountain range and to the southwest across the beautiful Ballinskelligs Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
The fairways are gently undulating. The front nine plays across relatively flat ground whilst the back nine weaves its ways through avenues of tall dunes. The view from the elevated 17th tee, an excellent Par 3 called “Murphy’s Peak”, is simply breathtaking. There are few courses that can boast such a fine collection of unique and great golf holes.

The world renowned 18-hole championship course at Doonbeg, spans 1.5 miles of crescent shaped beach and century old sand dunes along Doughmore Bay. The Dr Martin Hawtree newly re-designed course at Doonbeg is a stunning sight to behold and offers views of the Atlantic from 16 of 18 holes.
The par-72 layout features a single loop of nine holes out and nine back, playing 7,026 yards from the back tees. In line with Norman’s philosophy of ‘least disturbance’, the most natural route was taken in laying the course out through the sand dunes. As a result, the course has a unique combination of five par 3s and five par 5s.
DOONBEG GOLF LINKS

DAY 7: SUNDAY 29th SEPTEMBER 2024
GOLF: 1.42pm LAHINCH GOLF COURSE
Lahinch is a legendary links course overlooking the ever-changing Atlantic Ocean that has often been described as ‘the St Andrews of Ireland’. The Old Course was originally designed by Old Tom Morris before being tweaked by Dr Alister Mackenzie in 1927.
The holes are memorable from start to finish, though many single out the 5th as their favourite. A par-5 that measures 483 yards, the second shot is played over a sand dune wall to a ‘blind’ green and anything better than a par here is a real bonus! The Championship Links (Par 72, 6,950 yards) is justifiably proud of the reputation it has gathered as a stern challenge to even the most gifted of golfers.

Yes, there are two extra par-3s here and they are in play most days affording the golfer a 20-hole round which includes five holes running very close to the sea. So close that it is common to find players searching for their golf balls on the beach.
The bunkers with their walls lined with railway sleepers are quite remarkable and give a brilliantly stark definition to the links and fair warning to the players regarding hazard locations. Everyone will enjoy the many unique designs and, not least, the longest green in the world at hole twelve. This measures 127-yards from front to back and restores the art of the great three-putt as opposed to the soul shattering short three-putt. Golf is, after all, a game and it is meant to be fun!
