Tieke Estate is a study in modern golf course engineering and land reclamation. Opened in late 2021, it was born from the merger of the Lochiel and Narrows golf clubs after the latter's land was acquired for the Waikato Expressway. Architects Phil Tataurangi and Brett Thomson were tasked with transforming the Lochiel site.
Their solution was radical: they stripped metres of topsoil and vegetation to expose the ancient, sandy riverbed of the Waikato River that lay beneath. This allowed them to create a course with fine fescue fairways and creeping bentgrass greens-agronomy typically associated with coastal links, not inland river valleys.
