The Dunas Course at Terras da Comporta is one of Europe's newest standout layouts. Designed by David McLay Kidd (creator of Bandon Dunes) with Conor Walsh, it was carved through more than 1,000 acres of sandy coastal land south of Lisbon. The holes wander among natural dunes and native vegetation, giving the course a minimalist look reminiscent of Pine Valley and Australia's sandbelt. Wide fairways provide generous landing areas, but a network of cross and centre-line bunkers encourages players to choose strategic lines off the tee. Greens are large with subtle contours, and run-off areas bleed into sandy waste areas for links-style recovery shots.
The routing (par 71) features long par-4s, reachable par-5s and a collection of strong par-3s. One of the signature holes is the par-3 14th, which plays to a green flanked by vast sand expanses and cross-bunkers. The closing stretch features risk-reward par-4s and a long par-5 finish that heads back toward the clubhouse. The natural setting ensures there are no houses in view; instead, golfers enjoy vistas of umbrella pines and the Atlantic Ocean.
