Pinehurst No. 8—nicknamed the Centennial Course—celebrates the resort's first hundred years. Tom Fazio designed No. 8 in 1996 on the site of Pinehurst's old gun club. The routing meanders through wetland areas and Carolina pines, blending traditional Ross features—subtle greens and natural contours—with modern flourishes like expansive sandy waste areas. Fazio punctuates some holes with smaller bunkers (e.g., the par-4 second) and others with broad waste areas, such as the long dogleg-left fourth. The course also employs water hazards; the 14th features a Cape-style tee shot that tempts players to cut off as much of the lake as they dare.
Unlike the punishing turtleback greens of No. 2, No. 8's putting surfaces are large and undulating but fair. The course demands thoughtful tee-shot placement; numerous cross-bunkers and waste areas frame generous landing zones. No. 8 balances seclusion and playability, and it consistently ranks among North Carolina's best courses.
