Pinehurst No. 4

  • United States
Course Architect:
Par: 72
Course Length: 6961 metres

Following a meticulous 2018 renovation by Gil Hanse, Pinehurst No. 4 now complements its famous neighbour with a modern Sandhills aesthetic. Hanse stripped away acres of rough, restored natural sandy waste areas, enlarged greens and sculpted irregular, rugged bunkers. The course presents dramatic elevation changes and scenic vistas of the surrounding dunes and lakes. Wide fairways encourage aggressive play, but long native areas and cross-bunkering demand strategic tee shots. Water appears on several holes, notably the par-3 sixth and par-5 thirteenth, where a pond guards the green.

While No. 2 is celebrated for its turtle-back greens, No. 4 offers a contrasting experience: sweeping views, sprawling waste areas and bold bunkering. The layout hosted stroke-play rounds of the 2019 U.S. Amateur, where players praised its variety and playability.
