Pinehurst No. 2 is the crown jewel of Pinehurst Resort and a cornerstone of American golf. Donald Ross's design emphasises wide, rumpled fairways leading to "turtle-back" greens—small, domed putting surfaces that reject imprecise approach shots. Restoration work by Coore & Crenshaw re-introduced the natural sandy waste areas, wire grass and exposed native sand that originally defined the course. The layout winds over gently rolling Sandhills terrain; there are very few water hazards, so the course relies on strategic bunkering, elevation changes and the challenge of its greens to defend par.
Pinehurst No. 2 has hosted multiple major championships, including the U.S. Open (1999, 2005, 2014 and 2024), U.S. Women's Open, PGA Championship, U.S. Amateur and numerous PGA Tour events. Golfers walk in the footsteps of legends such as Payne Stewart (1999 U.S. Open champion) and Ben Hogan. The course remains a favourite for its strategic design and historic ambience.
