Pearl Valley sits within the Val de Vie Estate, an exclusive residential development near Paarl and Franschhoek. Opened in 2003, it is one of six Jack Nicklaus signature courses in South Africa and is consistently ranked among the country's top-10 layouts. The 18-hole course was created on a flat site between the Berg River and surrounding mountains; Nicklaus used water hazards, white-sand bunkers and subtly sloping greens to craft a challenging yet playable routing.
The par-72 layout features five sets of tees and plays as long as 7,381 yards from the back tees. Wide fairways bordered by scrub and indigenous grasses invite aggressive driving, but golfers must negotiate numerous lakes and streams that influence strategy. The course's signature holes are the parallel par-4 7th and 8th, separated by a broad expanse of water; both require a carry over water on either the tee shot or approach.
