Palmetto Golf Club is steeped in history. Located in Aiken, it was founded in 1892 and is among the oldest continuously operated golf courses in the United States. The layout winds through rolling Carolina sand hills, flanked by mature pines. Alister MacKenzie re-bunkered and recontoured the greens in the 1930s, giving the course its distinctive undulating putting surfaces and natural-looking bunkers. Although the club remains private and access is limited to members and their guests, Palmetto's traditional design and green complexes have influenced nearby Augusta National and continue to be studied by architects.
The course plays to a par 71 and features fast, firm fairways with subtle elevation changes. Several doglegs require shaped tee shots; most greens are small and raised with significant contours. Palmetto's finishing stretch (holes 14-18) provides a challenging mix of long par 5s and short but tricky par 4s. The course has hosted numerous amateur events and remains a treasured "time capsule" of early American golf architecture.
