Old Barnwell aims to bring people together through golf. Nestled among towering longleaf and loblolly pines on sandy soil near Aiken, the club opened in 2023 with the mission of welcoming golfers of all backgrounds and supporting initiatives for under-represented communities. The 18-hole course sprawls across 575 acres, featuring rolling hills and wide fairways fringed by native wiregrass. Tom Doak and his team drew inspiration from classic English heathland courses, using undulating greens, strategic bunkering and sandy waste areas to encourage creativity.
Old Barnwell's bold scale includes enormous greens and fairways, but the course rewards thoughtful angles and well-considered shot shapes. With only three par 3s and five par 5s, the par-73 layout emphasises variety. There are multiple teeing grounds, including a 15-hole Kids' Course and plans for a third course. Membership is national; the club offers programs such as the Annika Development Program, Evans Scholars Foundation and local kids' clinics.
