Jack Nicklaus II – often called “Jackie” by those close to him – is an American golf course designer who has carried on the legacy of his legendary father, Jack Nicklaus, in the design realm. Born in 1961 as the oldest son of the 18-time major champion, Jack II grew up around the game’s elite but forged his own path in course architecture. As a player , he had a solid junior and collegiate golf career (he played for the University of North Carolina and won a state amateur title in Ohio), though he never pursued the PGA Tour full-time, choosing instead to focus on the family business of design. Since designing his first course in 1991, Jack Nicklaus II has become a leading force at Nicklaus Design, eventually serving as president of the firm . In this role, he has been both a solo architect and a collaborator with his famous father on numerous projects.

Jack II’s portfolio spans over 50 courses worldwide . Early on, he made a name co-designing courses like Talon at TwinEagles Club (Florida) which opened in 1999 (a father-son project that has hosted PGA Tour Champions events) . He also led designs on his own: for example, The Legacy Golf Links in North Carolina (1991) carries Jack II’s name and is praised as an enjoyable Sandhills course with plenty of challenge . In the late 1990s, his work gained accolades – Golf Digest named Aspen Glen Club (Colorado), a Jack II co-design, among the best new courses of 1998, and his solo design at Arzaga Golf Club in Italy won that country’s Best New Course award in the same year . Jack II’s style reflects Nicklaus Design’s philosophy of the era: he often includes ample fairways, risk-reward water hazards, and large, contoured greens to create courses that are challenging but fair. Having learned from his father, he’s attuned to tournament play requirements, yet also mindful of the average golfer’s experience. Pinehills Golf Club (Massachusetts), another of his designs, debuted in 2006 on Golf Magazine ’s “Top 100 You Can Play” list, illustrating his knack for crafting courses public players appreciate .

In addition to designing new courses, Jack Nicklaus II has been instrumental in modernizing older Nicklaus courses and handling renovation commissions as the Nicklaus brand expanded. He’s earned a reputation as a diligent, personable architect who works well with owners and clubs. In 2000, Golfweek honored him in their “40 Under 40” list of influential figures expected to shape golf’s future . Indeed, Jack II has upheld the Nicklaus standard of excellence in design, ensuring that the Golden Bear’s design philosophy continues into the new generation. While inevitably compared to his legendary father, Jack Nicklaus II has stepped out of the shadow by building a respected body of work and demonstrating leadership at one of the world’s premier design firms. His courses carry the Nicklaus DNA – strong strategic values and polished shotmaking tests – and his ongoing influence helps perpetuate the Nicklaus legacy in golf architecture’s modern era .
