The Thousand Kyoto, opened in January 2019, represents the "Third Wave" of Kyoto hospitality: neither a traditional Ryokan nor a standard Western luxury chain. Its name pays homage to Kyoto's moniker as the "City of a Thousand Years," but its execution is radically contemporary.
The brand concept is "Comfort Minimalism" and "Personal Comfort." This philosophy rejects the ornate gold-and-lacquer aesthetic often forced upon Kyoto hotels. Instead, it employs a design language of "light, wind, and greenery" (In Praise of Shadows). It targets the "Global Creative Class" who value privacy, intelligent design, and bespoke experiences.
